What You Need to Know About Home Battery Storage + Solar

Battery Storage
|

New technologies and innovations in the solar industry are constantly being made and home battery storage is no exception. Tesla Powerwall and SunPower SunVault home batteries work with your solar energy system and are designed to make life much easier for homeowners by storing the excess power their home solar panels produce for future use.

Solar panels harness the power of the sun and turn that energy into electricity that will then power your home. When your system produces extra electricity, a home battery will store that energy to use during power outages, scheduled blackouts, and when the grid goes down. This backup electricity can power your appliances, devices and more so your life isn’t disrupted when the power goes out. The duration of backup power will vary based on the devices and items in your home that you choose to power during these times.

Many people believe if your home has a solar rooftop system, then you’re independent from the electrical grid. The fact is, most systems actually work in coordination with your local utility. Without a home battery, the excess energy your solar panels produce will be sent back to your utility. When your panels don’t produce enough electricity (on cloudy or overcast days), your home will pull the electricity it needs from the utility. While this is still beneficial to homeowners because it will likely reduce (and sometimes eliminate) electricity costs for homeowners with solar energy systems and provides an opportunity to benefit from net metering, when your home solar system is not paired with home battery backup, you will not have backup power during blackouts and outages.

Home battery storage offsets your reliance on the utility during the decline in daily energy production as well as during emergency situations like blackouts. When your home’s solar panels produce more energy than needed during a regular day, that excess energy will charge your home battery first (building a reserve for outages, blackouts, etc.) and after it’s fully charged, any excess power goes back to the utility. Later in the day when the sun goes down and your panels stop producing energy, you can utilize the stored energy in your home battery to supplement what you need from the utility.
